  • During the experiment, it is crucial to monitor the incoming data to ensure against programming, storage, or communication failures.
  • One way to verify the accuracy of energy-related measurements is to calculate an energy balance: if an electrical panel is fully sub-metered, the sum of those measurements should equal a measurement of the total power to the panel.
  • It is also important to think ahead about what quantities need to be calculated in real time. A typical example is the calculation of thermal energy delivered by a system, which is based on the product of flow rate and temperature difference. Usually the primary measurements in this case are two temperatures and a flow rate. If data are being stored as hourly averages, post-calculating the product using hourly averages will not yield the correct answer, because the product of the averages is not equal to the average of the products.
